2019 GALLERY

Nathan Williams, August 19-September 18, 2019

My experiences at Baraka has inspired monumental change in both my art and my life.

Baraka is about giving, it is sharing on multiple levels simultaneously. At home; in the community, locally; and internationally. It was so fulfilling to give to the young people and families in the hamlets and communities of Stanfordville for the portrait workshop events that we facilitated. Baraka’s Stanford Pushcart Derby is an outreach program that I could see being effective in communities around the world.

It is impossible to emphasize what an incredible opportunity it was to spend mornings working side by side under the direction of master direct carver, Kardash Onnig; his brilliance paralleled only by his patience.

Being from Brooklyn, I greatly appreciated and tried to lean into the generous gift of Baraka’s beautiful grounds and remote setting. At any moment this could mean a simple walk and talk, learning to pick string beans from the gorgeous garden, or managing the compost system. I looked forward to the serenades of the night time wildlife, some more wild than others.

My time at the Baraka residency was rich and expansive.

I was able to flesh out all of the song-sketches I brought with me. I thrived on a balanced diet of gardening and finger-picking. I ran hard through the forests around Stanfordville cranking Meredith Monk in my ears and feeling very held by all the green. The space was exactly what I needed and more than what I could have hoped for." Megan
